Incredible India

September 22, 2009

I never imagined that I’d have a chance to see one of the Wonders of the World, but last week I did.

Last week Oldways organized a conference in Delhi (more about this later), but before the conference, we took the time to travel from Delhi to Agra to see the Taj Mahal.  The road from Delhi to Agra looks like a major highway on the map, but a major highway in India is not like Interstate 95 between Boston and New Hamsphire!

The journey was almost as wonderful as the visit to the Taj Mahal.  In no particular order, along the way we saw and experienced:  monkeys climbing the car at a tax-paying stop, cows in the road, thousands of  trucks, cars motorcycles and tuk tuks all honking their horns, a traffic jam that caused us to drive 50 mph on the wrong side of the road, a snake charmer, and most memorably, a runaway camel being chased by its owner around a roundabout.

Finally, the Taj Mahal is even more grand and glorious than in photographs.  It’s size, its majesty, the engraved jewels, the symmetry, the marble, the setting  — I am still pinching myself.   How lucky to experience Incredible India!
