Normandy Beaches – Violent Yesterday, Placid Today

December 22, 2009

Then

Now

I walked out into the water and turned around to look back at the coast line and at what our troops must have seen as they jumped into the water in full battle gear, in the face of the German machines concealed in the cliff ahead, and in concrete block house atop the cliffs.  What courage and determination they had with death staring at them from Omaha Beach!  The vast, moving and beautiful Normandy American Cemetery has 9,387 burials of US service men and women who died there.

PS. Come visit the Normandy beaches with Oldways this spring!
